Unions to hold Dáil protest during debate on pay cuts

MondayDecember  14th2009

Dublin based members of the public sector trade unions have organised a protest to take place outside Dáil Eireann (Kildare Street) from 6 to 8pm tomorrow (Tuesday 15th December). The protest will be addressed by David Begg, General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) and Sheila Nunan, incoming General Secretary of the Irish National Teachers' Organisation (INTO).

The protest will take place as the legislation implementing the pay cuts announced in the Budget will go before the Dáil. All of the public sector unions have called upon members to attend the protest.

Mr Begg said that the budget announced last week was as ‘‘the most right wing ever’’, and before the budget had warned that the move to cut public sector pay was part of an agenda to drive down wages across the whole economy. He said that the Minister for Finance admitted this in his budget speech last Wednesday.
